Vigilant 150 mg and the letters IP

On a carton of Vigilant 150 mg, two letters follow the name of the active substance: IP. The tablets are made by Taj Pharmaceuticals, an Indian pharmaceutical company based in Mumbai, and according to the label each contains 150 mg of armodafinil. Effects, suitability and amounts are matters for the package leaflet and your doctor or pharmacist.

What ‘IP’ on the box means

IP stands for the Indian Pharmacopoeia, the national book of standards for medicines. Its monograph for a substance sets requirements for identity, purity and content, along with the methods used to test them. A carton marked IP tells you which standard the tablets were made and tested to, and no more: the letters make no claim about what a tablet does in a person.

The maker and the label

Taj Pharmaceuticals’ name and address appear on the carton, with the manufacturing licence number, the batch number, the manufacturing date and the expiry date; the brand, strength, batch number and expiry date are also printed on the blister foil. We repeat what the box states and stop there, crediting Taj with no certificates, distinctions or markets we could not evidence.

How it arrives, and what we check

• Untouched original: Taj’s sealed carton, kept sealed in our EU warehouse until dispatch, with uncut blister strips and the manufacturer’s package leaflet, the first thing to read.
• No repacking: we do not decant, relabel or split blisters to fit a pack size. A pack that cannot go out whole and sealed does not go out.
• Laboratory testing: before a batch is listed, a sample drawn from it is sent to an independent laboratory.
• Certificate of Analysis: downloadable as a reference report for the substance. It identifies armodafinil and confirms the declared amount, but it is not tied to any single batch, and like the IP mark it documents contents, not what they do for anyone.

Vigilant and the other four 150 mg brands

Same substance, same declared strength: Walkalarm (Ryon Pharma), Waklert (Sun Pharma), Armovigil (NATCO Pharma) and Artvigil (HAB Pharmaceuticals). Grids that grade such brands by how they supposedly feel describe marketing, not the label, and tend to favour the dearer box. The only comparison we publish is by maker, pack size and cost per tablet:

Vigilant is marked; entries are listed from the lowest price per tablet upwards, whatever the brand. The wider armodafinil category also includes 50 mg brands, and we never express prices per milligram: that would imply a tablet of one strength can stand in for another, a statement about dose that is not ours to make. Legal framework and dosing

Our shop neither requires nor issues prescriptions, but armodafinil needs one: in most EU countries it is dispensed only on prescription, and many jurisdictions classify it as a controlled substance. Conditions for buying, possessing and importing it for your own use vary by country and are revised periodically; checking them for the destination before you buy falls to you. Side effects and safety

Commonly reported: the package leaflet lists headache, nausea, dry mouth, reduced appetite, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, anxiety and nervousness.

Serious skin, allergic, psychiatric or cardiac reactions: stop taking armodafinil immediately and seek urgent medical help if you notice a skin rash, blistering, ulceration of the mouth or eyes, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, fever, chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, agitation, depression or thoughts of self-harm. A rash can be the first sign of a serious reaction, so do not wait and see. Contraindications: do not take armodafinil if you have a known hypersensitivity to modafinil or armodafinil.

Medical advice is essential before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, impaired liver or kidney function or a history of psychiatric illness. The same applies if you take any other medicines, as interactions are possible: speak to a doctor or pharmacist first. Do not combine or alternate medicines without professional advice.

Hormonal contraception: armodafinil reduces the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives, including pills, patches, rings, implants and hormonal coils. If you rely on one of these, arrange additional or alternative contraception with a doctor or pharmacist before use, and review it with them when you stop taking armodafinil.

Leaflet and storage: read the package leaflet before anything else. Whether armodafinil is suitable for you is for a doctor or pharmacist to decide, with the leaflet and your medical history in front of them. Store the tablets in their original pack at normal room temperature, in a dry place away from direct light, and out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use them after the expiry date printed on the carton and the blister.

Questions and answers

Is Vigilant the same as Waklert?

Both cartons declare 150 mg of armodafinil. Taj Pharmaceuticals makes Vigilant to the Indian Pharmacopoeia standard and Sun Pharma makes Waklert; the presentation and price differ. None of that says which, if either, suits you.

Where are the batch number and expiry date?

On the carton and on the blister foil, and the two should agree. Check them, together with the name and strength, against your order; if something does not match or the seal is damaged, contact us before using the tablets.

Will I get a certificate for my own batch?

No: the report covers the substance, and we issue no per-batch certificates, although your batch was sampled and independently tested before going on sale.
